We all know Damian’s not one for physical or verbal affection. So I raise you: drawings

Drawings and paintings are the easiest way inside Damian’s mind. The more angry or disturbed he is, the more details the drawing is and the palette depends on the emotion. Fear? Bright lights with one pitch black spot. Anxious? A mixture of dark and light colours.

No matter what he draws, the batfam always looks for how detailed it is. On days he’s happy or content the drawing looks a bit abstract, like too many ideas were flowing and he didn’t mind making a mess (not having a specific direction) of his drawing.

But it’s also how he shows affection.

On Dicks birthday he once painted the entire circus along with a little dick laughing and swinging on the trapeze with his parents with the crew doing their acts and the animals having fun.

That was the first indication Dick had of Damian’s change in behaviour that showed him he was willing to open up, to care and change…even if it took time.

Jason found a particularly striking portrait of his favourite scene from a book, painted with a magnificent splendour with every detail and symbolism present, with the characters drawn just as he’d imagined. It’s so beautiful he hangs it in one of his most visited safe houses, and it isn’t until later when he realises it could have been the reason Damian stole his favourite book which contained notes on each scene.

Alfred catches a glimpse of Damian painting something he insists is for Bruce’s eyes only, but the palette was a mixture of bright colours.

Only on his parents death anniversary, when all his siblings are in town and sitting in a room with Bruce when he taps on Dick, Jason and Steph’s shoulders and asks them to come with him. They’re hesitant at first but the vulnerability in his eyes finally wins them over.

Damian knows how to draw, but not how to present, especially when everyone’s watching and he doesn’t know how they’ll react, or rather how Bruce would.

So they help him figure out how he wants to show Bruce, and on his request together take the painting and unveil it in front of Bruce when they’re all standing on the Balcony.

It’s a picture of the entire family, with all the newest members and in the background homages of their superhero identities, along with Easter eggs for poison ivy, Harley, the justice league and so many others.

But in the centre was Bruce, standing in the centre of his parents and all the other members in order from oldest to youngest, surrounding him.

It was the first time Damian learnt that tears aren’t always a bad thing.

Summary: Set before the events in The Suicide Squad, you and your boyfriend Rick convince Waller to let Harley out for a night out

You let out a loud sigh as you regianed your balance after the fight. You caught your breath, looking around at what remained. Or rather, who remained. You weren’t surprised to find Rick alive, looking tired but alive. Alongside him was the infamous Harley Quinn. You limped on your injured leg over to the two of them.

“How are you feeling?” you muttered, coughing out some smoke. Rick looked up at you.

“Rough,” he muttered back.

“You know?” Harely said, standing. “I’m actually okay!” You laughed gently and nudged her.

“Of course you are.” You grabbed Rick’s hand and Harley grabbed his other. The two of you helped him up. You looked him over, tracing down his arm as you tried to find any serious wounds. He probably had a concussion but other than that, he looked alright.

“Are you okay?” Rick asked, looking you up and down. He traced your figure with his eyes, though it was far from sexual. Harley watched as you nodded, feeling a tinge of jealousy. She only saw Rick as a friend of course but she envied how much he adored you.

“I’m alright,” you promised. “Some bruises but that’s all.”

“I could use a couple drinks. What do y’all say?! On me?”

“Harley, you don't have any money. You’re in prison,” Rick muttered. You shrugged.

“Party pooper,” she muttered.

“Come on Rick. Harley’s been doing so good, I think she deserves a treat,” you said. Rick gave you a long look but he knew you were right. You and him had been roped into the different versions of the Suicide Squad and Harley was the only constant member. You had grown fond of her. Rick had to, though he would never actually say it.

“Listen to your girlfriend!” Harley said.

“We have to talk to Waller otherwise your head will get blown up after walking in,” Rick said. Harley let out a loud exaggerated grown.

“I’ll talk to Waller,” you said, walking between Harley and Rick back to the rendezvous point.

“This is why you’re my favorite,” Harley said with a smile. You glanced over at her with a similar smile. You were glad the three of you had made it out alive. You were the only ones worth a damn anyway. “Can I get a pick at who comes with us next time? There’s some inmates I have been dying to throw to the sharks.”

“No Harley,” Rick said. He put his hand on your back, leading you there as though you couldn’t handle yourself.

“Oh come on Flag.” She looked over at you. “How about you? You know, if you two get married I think I’m going to call you the better Flag. Mmm I don’t like that. I’ll come up with something catchy.”

“I’m sorry Harley, we don’t even get a say. That’s all Waller,” you explained.

“Waller, Waller, Waller. Who said she was so special?” Harley sulked. You shrugged.

“Someone who hated you I’m sure.”

You stood beside Amanda Waller as she looked over a computer.

“No,” she muttered.

“I knew you were going to say that so I came with backup points. Harley deserves an outing okay? Rick and I will be right there with her the whole time. I won’t drink a drop and if it makes you feel any better, neither will he. I know she did a lot of bad things but she’s atoning for them by being the only consistent member of the Squad. Amanda, she deserves this.” Waller stood up and looked you right in the eyes. You would be lying if you said she wasn’t intimidating.

“She’s a criminal.”

“Not all criminals are awful people.”

“She would betray you in a blind of an eye.” You shook your head.

“She wouldn't, I don’t think. She’s changed since knowing the Joker. Come on. I’ll even give her my own leave time.” Waller seemed to like that. She hated when you and Flag left at the same time. She hated that two of her best were dating. It just added liability.

“I don’t condone it but if you...if you take Harley out for one night I’ll look the other way.” You smiled brightly.

“Thank you so much. She’ll be so excited.”

“If she kills someone I’m charging you for it.”

“Of course!”

“Harley, get down from there!” Rick called. He had his arm around you, holding you tightly to his side. You had your head on his chest sleepily, though you were laughing gently at what Harley was doing.

“Flag you are such a party pooper!” she whined, stepping down from the table. She sat back down in the booth.

“It’s like watching a child,” he murmured. You moved his hand that was around your shoulder and kissed his palm gently.

“Go get more drinks Rick.”

“I’m not leaving her unattended.”

“I’m here. Relax.” He looked between you and the Queen of crime before sliding out of the booth.

“I’ll be only a second.” He walked away and disappeared in the crowd. Harley leaned over the table.

“So what’s he like in bed?” she asked, laughing. You shook your head leaning back.

“What do you think?”

“That good huh?!” You giggled back at her and tried to find Rick in the crowd but he was long gone. You looked back at Harley. “Thanks for this by the way.” She gestured wildly around the club. “It’s been ages since I’ve gotten a good drink.”

“Of course. You deserve it.” She smiled genuinely.

“You know, I like you!” she said. “I like you and your boyfriend. Not as much as you like each other but hey, that’s a hard feat to match.” You grinned gently.

“Is that jealousy I sense Harls?” She shrugged.

“I don’t wanna sleep with you or him, no offense. I just...admire how much he loves you. He’s never mean to you and I don’t think he’s ever killed your dog or nothing. You must really love each other.” You leaned over the table and grabbed her hand. She met your eyes.

“You’ll find that one day Harley. It’s worth the wait.”

“What is this? You tryin to steal my girlfriend Quinn?” You pulled away slowly from her and met Rick’s eyes. Harley’s exaggerated smile was back on her face like it had never left.

“I just might! You better watch out Flag.”

“Don’t worry hun, I only have eyes for you,” you said to him as he put down the drinks. He put your arm back around you and kissed your forehead.

“If you left me for someone in jail I might be a little offended.”

“Hey, I’m a catch,” Harley said. You took a drink out of your cup.

“Alright you two, let's just enjoy the rest of the evening before we have to get you back to prison.”

“Cheers then!” Harley held up her cup. You and Rick clinked them together.

“Cheers.”

And you know, without turning that Harley Quinn is smirking at you while Ivy looks at you with those hungry eyes that make you feel like you're being hunted- and it's getting harder and harder to avoid getting caught.

"Nothing much," you hum, already reaching for bottles, "The usual?"

"Please," Ivy murmurs, practically purring.

Forcing yourself to take a deep breath before you turn, you start mixing drinks, "Long day?"

"Nothing our favorite bartender can't cure," Harley assures. And you know. You know that she watching you. Her fingers skim your wrist when you hand her her cocktail. And when your breath hitches, just slightly, their matching grins give you butterflies.

"I'll do my best," you manage, trying to ignore the heat in your belly.

"Level with me, Beautiful," Ivy hums, "How long has it been?"

"Since-"

"Since you took a tumble with anyone other than your battery operated boyfriend," Harley said, her eyes glittering. Mocking, teasing, but not cruel.

"I don't- I just-"

"That long?" Pamela tsked, shaking her head. "Harls- it's a crime."

"A Damn shame," Harely agrees, picking up a napkin and scrawling a number on it.

"I-" You can't think. You can't move. You know they're dangerous but- fuck. They just smell so good.

Harley tucks the slip of paper in the breast pocket of your flannel, her clever finger, brushing lightly against your nipple piercing, making your knees tremble. "You little shit," she says, "I never woulda guessed."

"Hmm?" Ivy said, her eyes teasing as she sipped her drink.

"She's pierced," Harley said satisfied.

"Ooo," she purred, "Barbells or?"

"Feels like little stars- so cute!"

"Got any more?" Ivy asked, interested.

"No spoilers!" Harley said leaning up and kissing the end of your nose sweetly, "Just- just give us a call huh? We'll walk you home."

And before you can process what just fucking happened, they drop a hundred dollar bill on the bar and you're left staring at their glasses. Blushing and stammering as Ivy teases Harley about you being their little shooting star.

Hooo, wait until he hears about Harley beating the crap out of the Joker and living her own life. Or Batman and Cat woman getting married. Honestly it’s amazing people think they can spoil comics because there are so many different storylines and alternate universes and etc that really, it doesn’t make a difference if you tell me what happens in one story, cause there’s also an alternate universe where all the DC hero’s died but Supergirl and Batman’s daughter (forgive me I forgot her name) got sent to a different universe and became Powergirl and (why you do this memory).

Also there’s a Batman story, that’s actually part of the story where he marries Catwoman, where the Joker and the Riddler have a full out war with each other. And they’re basically Best friends. I actually refuse to say more than that because it’s actually such a great story.

I’m still going to tag this spoilers because I don’t want to be a jerk just in case.

This is for everyone who wants to know about Sophie in the Joker 2019 movie. But doesn't want to watch the movie.

Arthur hallucinate everything with Sophie. He has one postive (real) interaction with her in the elevator. Its not really clear if he stalks her to her job or if that was part of his halluicanation too but either way. His hallucination starts when "Sophie" confront him about him stalking her. And she like supposedly cool with that and goes on a date.

He only ever imagines her in supportive roles in his life. To support him when his mother has a stroke etc.

He has one more real interaction with her. And that when goes to her house (idk why this bitches door was just unlocked. Thats not how black women work first off.) He sit on her couch and she comes back from her daughters room.

And say to him "What are you doing in my house?". And he replies he had a "bad day." She ask him if he wants her to call his mother. It cuts and hes just seen leaving her apartment. No blood, no scream, no gross fucking rape scene. Its implied later people who were nice to Arthur before his mental break down live.

He basically leaves her apartment and we never see her again.

So in conclusion I feel like they probably had a lot of more Sophie moment that were cut. Which was a shame. Because Arthur hallucinations were really sweet. And Sophie was sweet too.

Is that going to stop me from shipping them? Fuck no. She ain't gotta deal with Jared leto ass joker. And I want a harely quinn but not really a harely quinn Sophie can be her own love interest with zero tragic backstory. That so happens to date the Joker.

  Summary

Vote Harely! Well into the new mayoral election this issue sees Harley connecting to the people and preparing for a live debate on TV. While she isn’t ahead in the poles at the moment she is steadily gaining momentum and sure to take the lead soon! Her whole cacophony of friends is helping run her campaign and supporting her in any way they can.

Meanwhile, Mayor DePerto and Madison Berkowitz have plans of their own to take her out of the running, permanently! They have contacted Dr. Jonathan Crane, aka Scarecrow, to help intervene.

Amid the stress of the campaign Harley has time to meet up with her old flame Mason. Finally after the “Arkham thing,” a kidnapping and multiple deaths they get to reconnect and they don’t waste time doing it!

What do the Mayor and Scarecrow have planned for Quinn? What drugs, gasses, and toxins could they use to take her out of the running without incriminating themselves?

  Positives

The art in this issue is fantastic! Mirka Andolfo does a fantastic job of making Harley look high energy, strong but also vulnerable. Vulnerable in a human way that is induced when under a lot of stress and when people need a break. The smooth and soft lines that Andolfo uses to depict Harley make her look the way she feels in this issue. Nothing about the illustrations of her are sharp or hard. In contrast to Andolfo’s art, Kaluta’s is harsh. It is full of gritty, detailed drawings that feel like you are uncomfortably close to something, even if it is depicted as being across a room. This conflicting style perfectly match the events of Harley Quinn #29.

Negatives

Through out the issue it is clear that Harley is dealing with insecurities in her ability to be mayor. The issue goes on to show that she is insecure about her relationship with Ivy, but it feels seriously out of place. Especially with the previous issues showing Harley having a strong bond with many of those that she holds dear.

There are also a few inconsistencies in the art from the same artists. I might expect that with three total artists illustrating a book that they would have differences with how they draw a character, but there are quite a few inconsistencies from the same artists.

Because of these issues, Harley Quinn #29 feels a little lacking by the end.

  Verdict

While a gorgeous book with good jokes, great characters, and some real personal moments for Harley, it doesn’t quite hit the mark.
